The affected motorcycles include model year 2024 ZX636J (Ninja ZX-6R 40th Anniversary Edition ABS) and ZX636K (Ninja ZX-6R 40th Anniversary Edition), as well as model year 2025-2026 ZX636J (Ninja ZX™-6R ABS/KRT Edition ABS) and ZX636K (Ninja ZX™-6R/KRT Edition). These motorcycles were manufactured between April 3, 2023, and July 15, 2025. The defect arises from variations in the tightening of crankcase bolts during a previous repair process. This can result in improper oil clearance between the crankshaft and the #5 metal crankshaft bushing, leading to its seizure and subsequent engine power loss. Currently, there are no identified warning signs that precede this malfunction.
Kawasaki advises owners of affected vehicles not to drive them and to park them outside. The company is implementing a phased recall for remedy, though specific details regarding the repair process and when owners will be notified have not yet been fully detailed. The defect originates from the crankshaft assembly, manufactured by Kawasaki Motors Ltd. in Japan. The recall number assigned by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is 25V798.
