Families who have purchased light-up ballet or tutu skirts for children are being urged to stop using them immediately, following a federal warning that these products pose a serious risk of injury or death. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has identified two skirt models sold online as unsafe due to easily accessible button or coin cell batteries that children can ingest.

The affected products include the Kids Light Up Ballet Skirts sold on Walmart.com by PLGEBR and the Sizhinai LED Tutu Skirts sold on Amazon.com by Ausstin. Both skirts incorporate LED light strings powered by small batteries that violate federal safety standards established under Reese’s Law. These laws mandate that consumer products with such batteries must have secure enclosures and clear warning labels—requirements the two skirt models fail to meet.

Children can suffer severe internal injuries or even death if they swallow button or coin cell batteries. Ingestion can cause internal burns and other life-threatening complications. Despite the danger, neither of the manufacturers involved has agreed to an acceptable recall, according to CPSC.
