More than 44,000 pounds of packaged shrimp sold under the Bornstein Seafoods brand are being recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous bacterium that poses serious health risks, particularly to the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and those with compromised immune systems. While no illnesses have been reported, consumers are advised to check their freezers for specific lot codes associated with the affected shrimp products.

The recalled items include cooked and peeled ready-to-eat Coldwater Shrimp Meat in 1-pound and 5-pound bags distributed under various item and lot numbers. Though the shrimp was shipped primarily to distributors and retailers in California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia, it may have reached stores across the country through secondary distribution. Consumers are urged to be especially cautious if they have recently purchased frozen shrimp.

The contaminated product was identified through the company’s routine food safety testing, which detected the bacteria in a sample taken during processing. In response, Bornstein Seafoods has stopped distribution of the affected shrimp and launched an investigation to determine the source of the contamination.
