The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an advisory to the public, urging consumers not to eat, sell, or serve certain imported frozen shrimp products due to radioactivity. What?!!
This recall has gained traction on social media, with news of the radioactive shrimp quickly becoming a viral sensation, spawning numerous internet memes. The unexpected nature of the contamination and the unusual substance involved have fueled widespread online discussion and creative interpretations of the situation. The FDA continues its investigation and is coordinating with Indonesian seafood regulatory authorities to determine the root cause of the contamination and ensure consumer safety. Product information will be updated as more details become available through the agency’s ongoing efforts.
The FDA’s investigation into these shrimp products, initiated after U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detected Cesium-137 (Cs-137) in shipping containers and a sample of breaded shrimp, found that these specific frozen raw shrimp products appear to have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions. This has led to concerns that the product may have become contaminated with Cs-137, a man-made radioisotope that can result from nuclear reactions. While the level of Cs-137 detected in a single detained shipment was approximately 68 Bq/kg, which is below the FDA’s Derived Intervention Level of 1200 Bq/kg, the agency is taking a precautionary approach. The FDA has added PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati to a new import alert for chemical contamination, which will prevent future products from this firm from entering the U.S. until the underlying issues are resolved.
The potential health implications of Cs-137 exposure, particularly with continued consumption over a long period, include an elevated risk of cancer due to possible DNA damage. While the detected levels in the affected products are not considered an acute hazard, the FDA’s recommendation to avoid them is intended to minimize any long-term exposure to low-level radiation. Consumers who have purchased the identified lots of Great Value frozen raw shrimp from Walmart are advised to discard the product immediately and not consume it. Retailers and distributors are also instructed to remove these items from sale and dispose of them. Individuals who suspect they may have been exposed to elevated levels of cesium are encouraged to consult with their healthcare provider.
Radioactive shrimp memes were not the hero we expected in 2025, but absolutely the hero we needed.
