The recall, announced by Hofood99 Inc. of Brooklyn, New York, applies to enoki mushrooms marked with the UPC barcode 6 976532 310051 on the back label. Though no illnesses have been reported so far, exposure to Listeria monocytogenes can lead to severe infections in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems. In pregnant women, the bacteria can cause miscarriages or stillbirths.
The contamination was identified during routine testing conducted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture & Rural Development, which found the bacteria present in samples taken from a retail store in that state. Consumers are advised to either discard the mushrooms or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.
