The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in Hagerstown, Maryland, has announced the appointment of Linda Johnson, Ph.D., as its new Agnita M. Stine Schreiber Curator, effective July 2025. Johnson, currently a Visiting Professor of Art History at the University of Michigan-Flint, brings extensive expertise in American art history, with specializations in painting, sculpture, and works on paper from the 18th to 20th centuries. Her background includes a focus on American impressionism, realism, landscape art, environmental studies, and the intercultural exchanges between Euro-American artists.

In addition to her academic role, Johnson is a member of the Association of Museum Art Curators and the College Art Association. She holds a senior fellowship at the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Animal Ethics, and is the author of “Art, Ethics and the Human Animal Relationship” published by Palgrave Macmillan Press in 2021. Johnson’s past positions include curator roles at Hancock Shaker Village in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and Exhibition Coordinator at the Detroit Institute of Arts. She earned her Ph.D. from Michigan State University, where she also completed a Museum Studies Certificate.
Museum Executive Director Sarah J. Hall praised Johnson’s ability to convey complex art historical concepts in an accessible and engaging manner, noting her gallery presentation on William Merritt Chase’s Still Life Fish, Plate and Copper Container during the interview process as both entertaining and insightful. Hall expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with Johnson to bring innovative interpretations to the museum’s collection.

Singer, Jr. and Anna Brugh Singer, the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts boasts a world-class permanent collection spanning from ancient Roman and Egyptian artifacts to contemporary works. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1976, the museum offers a range of public programs and maintains free admission and parking.
