Ford Motor Company has announced a recall affecting more than 1 million vehicles due to a defect in the SYNC4 infotainment system that could impair the rear-view camera display. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that this malfunction, which causes the infotainment screen to freeze, black out, and reboot, may lead to a frozen or missing rear-view image, posing an increased risk of accidents.

The recall includes a wide range of models, such as the 2022-2024 Lincoln Navigator, 2021-2023 Lincoln MKX, 2023-2024 Lincoln Corsair, and 2024 Ford Mustang. Other affected vehicles include the Ford Super Duty series, F-150, Ranger, Mach-E, Transit, Expedition, Escape, Edge, and Bronco. In total, approximately 1,075,299 vehicles are impacted, all equipped with SYNC4 software versions between 1.7 and 1.9.
According to the recall report, the defect stems from improper operational sequencing in the SYNC software’s wireless communication subsystem. No prior warnings are provided to drivers before the issue occurs. Although Ford is aware of one minor crash linked to the defect, no injuries have been reported.

Ford’s remedy involves updating the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) software to SYNC4 version 2.0 or higher. Vehicle owners will receive notifications by mail beginning June 16, 2025, instructing them to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealer for a software update. Vehicles capable of receiving over-the-air updates will be updated remotely. Owners who previously paid for related repairs may be eligible for reimbursement under Ford’s established plan.
The NHTSA’s investigation began earlier this year following several complaints from F-150 owners about frozen rear-view camera images. Ford’s subsequent review found 232 warranty claims linked to the issue across various models. Notifications to dealers are scheduled for May 12, 2025.
