Ford Motor Company has announced the recall of 12,219 Bronco vehicles from model years 2021 and 2022 due to an issue with the rearview camera system. The vehicles were believed to have been repaired under a prior recall but were later found to have incomplete software updates, leaving the original safety defect unresolved.

The defect relates to a failure in properly updating the SYNC software, which governs the vehicle’s rearview camera. As a result, the rearview image may remain displayed after the vehicle finishes backing up, potentially distracting the driver and increasing the risk of an accident. The issue stems from a malfunction in the service tool used by technicians, which did not upload the correct software version during the previous recall repairs.
Ford began investigating the issue in late November 2024, following a review by its Critical Concern Group. After an internal audit revealed inconsistencies in the software installations, a cross-functional team was formed to examine the problem. The audit concluded in April 2025, finding that nearly 30% of the affected vehicles did not have the appropriate software installed. No accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the defect.

Owners of the affected Broncos will be notified by mail starting June 9, 2025, with notifications concluding by June 13, 2025. They will be instructed to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealer, where the SYNC software will be updated and validated free of charge. A reimbursement plan is also in place for those who previously paid out-of-pocket for repairs. Ford emphasized that the updated software package now correctly addresses the original noncompliance cited in the earlier recall.
