In response to severe flooding in Garrett and Allegany counties, the Maryland Insurance Commissioner has invoked emergency powers to ensure residents maintain critical insurance protections. The move comes after Governor Wes Moore declared a State of Emergency on May 15, 2025, due to the extensive flood damage across the two western counties.

Insurance Commissioner Marie Grant directed health insurers to suspend time limits on prescription refills and to allow immediate replacements for medical equipment, eyeglasses, and dentures. Additionally, all insurers operating in Maryland must temporarily halt cancellations of policies, including auto, homeowners, commercial, life, and health insurance, for affected residents.
These actions are part of the Maryland Insurance Administration’s authority during a declared emergency, aimed at safeguarding access to healthcare and coverage continuity. The Administration also released two official bulletins—25-7 and 25-8—informing insurers of their obligations during this period.
