The incident occurred at approximately 6:10 p.m. at a residence on the 2300 block of Schuster Road. The fire was discovered by a neighbor who noticed heavy flames. Firefighters from the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company arrived within six minutes and were met with intense fire conditions throughout the structure. Although the home was equipped with fire sprinklers, they were not installed in the attic, where investigators determined the fire had begun.

Despite the activation status of the smoke alarms being undetermined, 45 firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire and were able to bring the flames under control within an hour. Due to the home’s rural location, numerous water tankers were required to assist in fire suppression efforts. The blaze consumed the entire home, including a vehicle inside the garage.

Officials from the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office confirmed the preliminary cause as accidental, stemming from a lightning strike. Area residents reported hearing and seeing a strike during a severe thunderstorm, and lightning verification data later confirmed a direct hit to the property. Due to the intensity of the fire, heavy machinery was brought in to fully extinguish hot spots. The home and all contents are considered a total loss.
