Gregory Mitzel, 59, received the 24-month sentence from U.S. District Judge Karoline Mehalchick on May 8, 2025. He had previously pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to influence and retaliate against a federal official through threats. The threats occurred over a ten-month period beginning in September 2023, during which Mitzel made posts online targeting then-President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

After learning that federal authorities were investigating him, Mitzel escalated his behavior. He contacted the Assistant U.S. Attorney assigned to his case, identified himself, and directly threatened both the prosecutor and the prosecutor’s family. This action prompted additional charges related to retaliation against a federal official.
