The recall involves multiple packaging types, including 5×6 and 6×6 25-pound boxes, 60-count two-layer cartons, combo boxes, and 3-count trays, some of which bear UPC code 0 33383 65504 8. All the recalled tomatoes are associated with lot codes R4467 and R4470. The contamination was first suspected when Southeast Tomato Distributors notified Williams Farms Repack LLC by phone on April 29 that tomatoes from H&C Farms could be affected.
Salmonella infection can cause severe gastrointestinal illness and poses a greater risk to young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. In serious cases, the bacteria can enter the bloodstream, leading to complications such as endocarditis or arterial infections.
