Baltimore has recorded its lowest number of monthly homicides in history, with just five reported in April 2025. The figure marks a significant milestone for the city, which continues to see major declines in violent crime under the administration of Mayor Brandon M. Scott. Through the end of April, homicides are down by more than 31% and nonfatal shootings have decreased by over 27% compared to the same period last year, marking the lowest number of homicides to start a year in the city’s recorded history.

The April numbers represent a continuation of a four-year trend of decreasing violence in Baltimore. Since 2020, the city has experienced a 40% drop in homicides and a 43% reduction in nonfatal shootings. The improvements are credited to a comprehensive violence prevention strategy that involves coordination between the Baltimore Police Department, state and local legal authorities, community violence intervention programs, and city residents.

While acknowledging the progress, Mayor Scott emphasized that the work is far from over. He reiterated the city’s commitment to further reducing violence, highlighting that even five homicides in a month is still too many. City leaders are continuing to apply a wide range of tools aimed at prevention and community engagement in efforts to drive crime down even further.
