Residents of Williamsport, Maryland, are facing a significant increase in their monthly electric bills beginning June 1, as the town implements a higher electricity rate structure driven by regional market pressures. The average residential customer is expected to see a 42% increase in charges if the proposed Purchased Power Cost Adjustment is approved, raising typical monthly bills from $62.13 to $87.95 for users consuming 711 kWh. On a yearly basis, the average household using 965 kWh per month could see their electricity expenses climb from $997.92 to $1,418.56.

The rate hikes are linked to escalating prices in the PJM Interconnection LLC’s regional electricity capacity market, where auction prices for generation availability jumped from $29 per megawatt-day on May 31 to $270 per megawatt-day on June 1. PJM’s auctions ensure future energy availability but are not controlled by Williamsport, which must participate as a member of the market. Despite the town’s efforts to mitigate the impact, the increased costs are mandated for all Maryland utilities and stem from broader market conditions.
Williamsport’s annual Purchased Power Cost Adjustment requires approval from the Maryland Public Service Commission. A hearing is scheduled for May 6, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., and will be livestreamed via the Public Utility Law Judge (PULJ) YouTube channel. Details and documents related to the case can also be accessed online using case number 9507 at the Maryland PSC website.
