We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. Leatherman retired in 2013 after nearly 30 years with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, where he served in multiple capacities, including firefighter, rescue technician, and master technician. His work extended beyond county lines as a member of Virginia Task Force 1, taking part in search and rescue missions worldwide. He also collaborated with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the United States Agency for International Development on various disaster relief operations.

A resident of Washington County, Leatherman has remained active in the local community, contributing to several civic and advisory groups such as the Hagerstown Regional Airport Advisory Committee and the Washington County Republican Club. His service to the region’s fire departments and his efforts in emergency response have earned him numerous accolades, including the Fairfax County Fire Department’s Bronze Medal for Lifesaving and the Air National Guard’s Meritorious Service Medal.
