CBP officers at the Galveston port conducted a routine inspection of the passenger’s luggage upon disembarkation. Several vape pens containing THC and multiple prescription pill bottles were discovered, two of which contained a powdery substance. Subsequent drug testing confirmed the presence of both heroin and fentanyl. The individual was immediately taken into custody and turned over to local authorities for prosecution.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opioid often mixed with other drugs to increase potency, is considered one of the most lethal narcotics in circulation. With a potency capable of causing death in doses as small as two milligrams, fentanyl is frequently pressed into counterfeit pills or disguised as other substances, making unintentional overdoses increasingly common. The substance is primarily produced in clandestine labs and smuggled into the U.S. through Mexico.

Federal agencies continue to emphasize that any pill not prescribed and dispensed legally poses a serious risk.
