We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. Owned and operated by Shellie Ralston, The Rhubarb House has become known for its inviting atmosphere and signature lunch and brunch offerings. The restaurant’s origins trace back to Shellie’s early passion for the culinary arts, which began over three decades ago with a small catering business. That venture laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of Hagerstown’s downtown community.

Shellie’s journey in food service started during her college years, where she developed an interest in elegant food presentation and hospitality. She turned that interest into a career by launching her catering company roughly 35 years ago. A decade later, that business expanded into the full-service restaurant now known as The Rhubarb House.

The restaurant has remained a family-run operation throughout its history. Shellie has worked closely alongside her husband, John, and more recently their son, to manage the business. Seasonal and part-time employees have also played a role in supporting the restaurant’s day-to-day operations. Shellie attributes the restaurant’s longevity to the loyalty of customers in Hagerstown and the broader tri-state area, who have supported the business from its early days.
