Ford Motor Company has announced a recall affecting 152 of its 2019-2020 model year Transit Connect vehicles after determining that software meant to correct a previous safety defect was not properly installed. Although company records initially indicated the repairs had been completed, the necessary Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software was not correctly uploaded in these vehicles, leaving the original safety risk unaddressed.

The underlying issue originates from a prior recall, 20S60 (NHTSA No. 20V-636), which aimed to prevent engine overheating by lowering temperature thresholds in the vehicle’s fail-safe cooling system. Without the updated software, affected vehicles may experience delayed activation of the cooling strategy in the event of elevated engine temperatures, potentially resulting in engine damage or even fire under extreme conditions.
Ford traced the problem to its service tool, which failed to upload the correct software to certain vehicles during the initial repair process. Although technicians followed the proper procedures, the software on the service tool did not match the intended release for the recall, allowing the defect to persist unnoticed.

An internal audit of field service actions identified the issue in late 2024, prompting a comprehensive review of software installation records. By February 2025, the audit revealed that while most repairs were successful, a subset of Transit Connect vehicles remained vulnerable. Ford subsequently approved a new field action to rectify the problem.
Vehicle owners will be notified by mail beginning April 14, 2025, and instructed to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealer for a complimentary PCM software update. The updated software will be validated through Ford’s Professional Technician System before marking the service complete. Owners who previously paid for similar repairs may qualify for reimbursement under Ford’s existing recall reimbursement policy.
