A group of Maryland House Republicans is pressing Governor Wes Moore for answers following a federal court ruling that found the Maryland State Board of Elections (SBE) violated federal law by restricting access to voter registration records. Despite a formal letter sent nearly three weeks ago, the Governor has yet to publicly respond, prompting renewed calls for accountability from Republican leadership in the General Assembly.

On March 4, 2025, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland determined that the SBE failed to comply with the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), which requires transparency in maintaining voter rolls. The court found that the SBE had issued a regulation that blocked public access to information used to evaluate voter registration integrity, such as records indicating deceased individuals or non-residents remaining on the rolls. The court also ruled that SBE’s actions unlawfully hindered citizen investigations into voting irregularities.
In response, the Maryland House Republican Caucus sent a letter to Governor Moore on March 19. The letter raised concerns about voter registration accuracy and transparency and questioned what actions the Moore administration would take in light of the court’s findings. The letter referenced the Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections (RITE) lawsuit, which prompted the ruling after challenging SBE policies that restricted independent analysis of voter rolls.

According to the Republican Caucus, the SBE’s actions not only violated the NVRA but also suppressed legitimate efforts to maintain clean and accurate voter records. The March 19 letter was signed by Minority Leader Jason Buckel, Minority Whip Jesse Pippy, Assistant Minority Leader April Rose, Chief Deputy Minority Whip Wayne Hartman, and Delegate Mike Griffith, who chairs the House Ways & Means Election Law Subcommittee. Despite the gravity of the court ruling, they say they have received no acknowledgment from the Governor or his administration.
The House Republicans reiterated their concerns in an April 3 press release, urging the Governor to act on the ruling and ensure compliance with federal law. They emphasized that while budgetary issues have dominated the legislative session, the integrity of elections should not be overlooked. The group continues to seek a clear response from Governor Moore on whether he will repeal the SBE regulation and implement corrective measures.
