Skaggs began his professional career in 1971, joining Ralph Stanley’s band alongside his friend, Keith Whitley. He quickly gained a reputation for his musical creativity and technical skill through collaborations with J.D. Crowe & the New South and as the leader of Boone Creek. His transition to country music in the late 1970s, first as part of Emmylou Harris’ Hot Band and later as a solo artist, brought him mainstream success. His 1981 album Waitin’ for the Sun to Shine topped the country charts, leading to a string of 12 number-one hits throughout the 1980s and earning him a spot as the youngest inductee to the Grand Ole Opry in 1982.
Chet Atkins, the legendary guitarist and producer, credited Skaggs with revitalizing country music by steering it back toward its roots, helping to offset the commercialization of the genre during the ‘Urban Cowboy’ era. His influence earned him numerous accolades, including eight awards from the Country Music Association and four additional GRAMMYs in his early career. By 1997, Skaggs had established Skaggs Family Records, a label that focused on bluegrass and roots music, producing multiple GRAMMY-nominated albums and working with renowned acts such as The Del McCoury Band and Blue Highway.
