Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown has issued a consumer alert urging residents to take steps to protect their sensitive genetic information following the bankruptcy filing of genetic testing company 23andMe. The Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which allows the company to restructure its debts while continuing operations, raises concerns that genetic data collected by the company may be transferred or sold as part of the proceedings.

23andMe, which suffered a significant data breach last year affecting over seven million users, has stated that it plans to maintain operations during the bankruptcy process. The company has assured users that they retain the option to delete their accounts and associated data. However, Attorney General Brown is advising Marylanders to consider deleting their accounts to safeguard their highly personal information.
