The Town of Leesburg, Virginia, has once again been recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, marking its 35th consecutive year receiving this distinction. To qualify for Tree City USA recognition, a community must meet four criteria: maintain a tree board or commission, enact a tree-care ordinance, allocate at least $2 per capita to forestry efforts annually, and hold an annual Arbor Day observance. The Growth Award is presented to communities that demonstrate an elevated commitment to tree care through innovative practices, increased funding, or enhanced public education efforts.
The Tree City USA program, established in 1976, promotes urban forestry and helps communities across the country manage and grow their tree populations. Currently, more than 3,500 communities are part of the program, which is supported by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. The program provides a structured approach to maintaining healthy trees and creating greener, more sustainable environments.
