Authorities were alerted at approximately 11:15 a.m. on March 19 when a suspicious object was discovered inside a student’s backpack. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Office of the State Fire Marshal Bomb Squad, which arrived on the scene within 20 minutes. Boonsboro High School was evacuated as a precaution while bomb technicians assessed the device. It was later determined to be a hoax. Additional sweeps of the building by explosive detection dogs from both the State Fire Marshal’s Office and Maryland State Police revealed no other threats.
The investigation identified two 17-year-old students as suspects. Both were transported to the Maryland State Police Hagerstown Barrack for questioning and later released to their parents following consultation with legal counsel. No further threats were reported in the aftermath of the incident.

The students are now charged with false representation of a destructive device, disturbing school operations, and making a false statement to a police officer. These charges follow a joint investigation conducted by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and Boonsboro Police Department. In addition to legal consequences, the students may also face disciplinary action from Washington County Public Schools.
