Maryland State Police are ramping up enforcement efforts across the state during St. Patrick’s Day weekend, targeting aggressive, distracted, and impaired drivers. Troopers from all 23 barracks, along with the State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort (SPIDRE) team, will be conducting saturation patrols in areas known for high rates of impaired driving crashes. These initiatives are supported by funding from the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office.

Drivers should designate a sober driver, use public transportation or ride-share services, and report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911. Police also advise hosts of St. Patrick’s Day events to be responsible by providing non-alcoholic beverage options, ensuring guests have sober transportation, and being aware of potential legal liability if guests drive impaired.

Law enforcement officials stress the importance of staying vigilant, avoiding distractions such as texting while driving, and always wearing seat belts. The increased patrols aim to reduce the risk of impaired driving crashes and enhance roadway safety throughout the holiday weekend.
