A Cumberland man already in custody for arson is now facing additional charges after allegedly damaging a fire sprinkler at the YMCA where he was living, causing $65,000 in damages. Donald Lee Martin Jr. was served a criminal summons at the Allegany County Detention Center, where he is being held without bond.

The incident occurred on February 15, 2025, when Martin, a resident of the Cumberland YMCA, reportedly damaged a fire sprinkler in a stairwell. The vandalism caused significant flooding in the administrative section of the facility, resulting in extensive property damage. An investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal followed a report from YMCA staff on February 21, 2025.
The damage, assessed by the insurance company, led Deputy State Fire Marshals to apply for charges against Martin on February 28, 2025. Martin was charged with malicious destruction of property over $1,000, causing a false fire alarm, and maintaining a fire hazard.

Martin is also facing unrelated charges, including arson threat, threat of mass violence, and first-degree assault related to an incident at Rose’s Discount Store on Queen City Drive last month. The Cumberland Police Department is handling that investigation.
The Cumberland YMCA offers services to unhoused individuals and transitional support for families.
