Emergency crews were dispatched to the home on Darlington Avenue around 8:15 a.m. Aberdeen police officers arrived first and found the injured man outside. He told responders that two family members were still inside. Officers attempted to enter the home but were unable to due to thick smoke and flames. Firefighters from Aberdeen Fire Department and Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire & Emergency Services arrived moments later, but high winds quickly spread the fire throughout the house. It took 70 firefighters more than an hour to bring the fire under control.

Once inside, crews discovered the bodies of two individuals, believed to be the injured man’s 73-year-old wife and 30-year-old son. The man was transported to Bayview Medical Center for treatment, while an Aberdeen police officer was also hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Officials reported that no working smoke alarms were found in the home.

This fire was part of a series of deadly incidents in Maryland within a 24-hour period, with separate fires in Anne Arundel and Allegany counties also claiming lives. Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) are examining all potential causes of the Aberdeen fire. While the investigation remains ongoing, officials have found no evidence of criminal activity at this time.

A standard joint investigation between fire officials and local law enforcement is being conducted as is customary in fire-related fatalities.
