Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown has joined a bipartisan coalition of 37 states and territories calling on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take immediate action against counterfeit weight loss and diabetes drugs. The coalition’s letter highlights the dangers of online retailers illegally selling the active ingredients of GLP-1 drugs under misleading labels such as “for research purposes only” or “not for human consumption.” In reality, these products are advertised directly to consumers as cheaper alternatives to prescription medications. However, these unregulated substances often originate from undisclosed sources, raising concerns about contamination and the presence of harmful foreign substances.
Attorney General Brown emphasized the importance of protecting Maryland residents from fraudulent drug sellers. He noted that companies exploiting vulnerable consumers seeking affordable healthcare solutions must be held accountable. The letter asserts that the FDA has both the expertise and resources to address these deceptive practices and calls for stricter enforcement against compounding pharmacies that illegally produce and distribute these drugs.

The coalition also urges the FDA to collaborate with state pharmacy boards to ensure compounded GLP-1 drugs are manufactured under proper safety and sanitation standards. The effort is co-led by attorneys general from South Carolina, Colorado, Illinois, and Tennessee, with additional support from states including Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia, among others.
