Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown has joined a bipartisan coalition of 37 states and territories calling on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take immediate action against counterfeit weight loss and diabetes drugs. The coalition is urging the FDA to crack down on unauthorized sellers who market unregulated versions of medications such as Mounjaro, Zepbound, Ozempic, and Wegovy, commonly known as GLP-1 drugs. These counterfeit drugs, often sold online without prescriptions, pose serious health risks to consumers.

The coalition’s letter highlights the dangers of online retailers illegally selling the active ingredients of GLP-1 drugs under misleading labels such as “for research purposes only” or “not for human consumption.” In reality, these products are advertised directly to consumers as cheaper alternatives to prescription medications. However, these unregulated substances often originate from undisclosed sources, raising concerns about contamination and the presence of harmful foreign substances.

Attorney General Brown emphasized the importance of protecting Maryland residents from fraudulent drug sellers. He noted that companies exploiting vulnerable consumers seeking affordable healthcare solutions must be held accountable. The letter asserts that the FDA has both the expertise and resources to address these deceptive practices and calls for stricter enforcement against compounding pharmacies that illegally produce and distribute these drugs.
