U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in partnership with Royal Caribbean, has launched biometric facial comparison technology for cruise passenger debarkation in Puerto Rico. The system, first implemented on February 2 aboard Rhapsody of the Seas at San Juan Seaport’s Pier 4, is designed to streamline the arrival process, reducing clearance times and enhancing security.

The new system allows passengers to verify their identity in seconds by taking a photo at a designated kiosk, which is then compared to their travel documents. According to CBP, this technology can reduce clearance times by up to 30%, facilitating a smoother transition from ship to shore. While Rhapsody of the Seas has been homeported in San Juan since April 2024, this marks the first time Royal Caribbean has integrated biometric technology for cruise passenger processing in Puerto Rico.

CBP has emphasized that privacy protections are in place. Passengers who prefer not to use the facial comparison system can opt for manual identity verification with a CBP officer. Additionally, any photos taken during the process are immediately deleted after verification. The introduction of this system aligns with CBP’s broader initiative to modernize travel while maintaining security at ports of entry.
