Smithsburg officials are seeking public input on the future use of a town-owned lot at the entrance of Whispering Hills and North Main Street. An ad hoc committee, appointed by the mayor and town council, has been formed to explore potential uses for the space. The committee is encouraging residents to share their ideas to ensure the development aligns with community needs.

Among the proposed options for the lot are a community garden, playground, open market, sledding park, forested area, or a general gathering space. The committee’s goal is to create a functional and valuable addition to the town while incorporating input from Smithsburg residents. The lot is situated near the Whispering Hills development and in proximity to Smithsburg High School, Middle School, and Elementary School, making it a potentially high-traffic location. Smithsburg, a historic community in northeastern Washington County, has maintained much of its 19th- and early 20th-century character despite suburban expansion. The town, originally platted in 1814, has more than doubled in size over the years and is now the third-largest municipality in Washington County.
