In case you missed it, on Sunday over 100 protesters rallied in the City of Frederick calling for the city and county to adopt permanent ceasefire resolutions for Israel/Gaza conflicts. The protest coincides with a Change.org petition by “Frederick Ceasefire Now”, which has approximately 400 signatures. I personally feel this petition is short-sighted. After all, why call for only a ceasefire in Israel, when you could call for a global ceasefire and world peace?

We need your help to stay paywall free

We know you value local news and entertainment that is free, open, and independent. Producing high-quality, paywall-free content isn't free. It takes time, effort, and resources to keep you informed and entertained. Unlike corporate media, we don’t have deep-pocketed investors or big advertisers funding our work—we rely on you, our readers and listeners, to keep Radio Free Hub City running. We're literally running on a shoe-string budget, but keep working hard to provide as much news and entertainment as we can.

If just 5% of local area residents became paid supporters at only $5 per month, we could meet our fundraising goals and continue expanding our news coverage depth while continuing to provide free access for everyone. So, if you'd like to help us in our continuing quest to improve our coverage, please consider becoming a paying supporter.

Will you be one of the 5%?

I personally had no idea that Frederick was so influential in global conflicts that they can influence foreign policy to force a ceasefire in such a politically divisive region. So, we searched online, and here’s a list of all of the conflicts Frederick has helped resolve:

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m an absolute supporter of free speech, as well as a supporter of local action to effect change. However, I really have to question the wisdom and motivation behind such a movement to get a municipal government to issue such a proclamation which will have zero effect on an international scale, and in fact get local government to focus their efforts on drafting, debating, and voting to approve such a proclamation. Surely Frederick government has more important things to do, such as drafting local ordinances or focusing on local planning concerns, such as how are they going to be affected by the State of Maryland’s ridiculous budget deficit?

Actually, on further consideration, perhaps this isn’t such a bad thing. I’ve said for a long time now that the best thing government can do is in fact, nothing. And perhaps, if we flood local government with requests to adopt such pointless proclamations, they’ll have less time to interfere with our lives because they’ll be spending too much time with political posturing.

So please, go sign the petition. Then go start your own petition for local government to issue a proclamation regarding some cause they have zero influence over. Flood local government with such actions, and they’ll be able to accomplish nothing else. This is a fantastic strategy, and will ultimately lead to a lot better local governance, doing nothing.
