At today’s County Commissioners meeting, Wayne Keefer, a three-term Washington County Commissioner, has announced his resignation, effective February 21. Keefer emphasized his belief that government functions most efficiently when positions are temporary rather than lifelong careers, highlighting the importance of representatives who understand the challenges faced by working families. He initially intended to complete his term but noted that a new professional opportunity required his full attention. Keefer’s 3 1/2-year-old daughter also factored into his decision, as he aims to dedicate more time to his family.
A lifelong resident of Washington County, Keefer is a Hancock native and an accomplished professional with extensive experience in banking and education. He holds a B.S. and M.B.A. from Frostburg State University and has served as an adjunct professor in business-related fields. Beyond his professional roles, Keefer has contributed to numerous local nonprofit organizations and remains a Maryland-licensed real estate professional.

The process to fill Keefer’s vacancy will begin with the Republican Central Committee, as the position is partisan. The committee will interview candidates and recommend a nominee to Maryland Governor Wes Moore for appointment. Keefer plans to use the remaining time in office to complete ongoing county projects and assist in a smooth transition.
