The fire, originating in an upstairs bedroom, destroyed the duplex owned by the Ashby and Hawkins families. One adult was treated at the scene for inhalation injuries, and a juvenile received medical attention for a minor burn. Extreme cold weather complicated firefighting efforts. The Goodwill Fire Company led the response, with 40 firefighters battling the blaze for about an hour before it was brought under control.
The duplex sustained an estimated $150,000 in structural damage, with an additional $50,000 in losses to its contents. Adjacent properties also suffered exterior damage due to radiant heat. Tragically, two pet cats did not survive the fire. Smoke alarms were present, but their activation status remains under investigation, and no fire alarms or sprinklers were installed.
