The breach targeted two FCPS data tables within its newly implemented Student Information System, part of a multi-year migration. While the investigation continues, the district has confirmed that sensitive data such as social security numbers, which FCPS stopped collecting over a decade ago, was not compromised. In response, PowerSchool has removed the breached data file, reported the incident to the FBI, and engaged cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. Thus far, no evidence has surfaced indicating that the stolen data is being circulated on the dark web.
In contrast, Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) has confirmed that it was not affected by the breach. WCPS does not utilize PowerSchool products or services. The district emphasized its commitment to cybersecurity, noting its reliance on robust tools and practices to safeguard student and family information. WCPS acknowledged the evolving nature of cyber threats and praised its Information Technology team for their proactive efforts to protect the district’s technology systems and data.
