In response to the gas cutoff, Transnistria’s primary power source, the Cuciurgan power station, has transitioned from natural gas to coal. However, with coal reserves estimated to last only 50 to 52 days, this measure offers a temporary solution. Authorities have implemented energy rationing, including the closure of most industrial operations and the establishment of heating centers to support residents during the crisis.
The halt in gas transit stems from Ukraine’s decision not to renew its gas transit agreement with Russia, a move that has also impacted other Eastern European nations reliant on Russian gas supplies. This development has intensified the energy crisis in Transnistria, a region that has depended on Russian energy support since declaring independence from Moldova in the early 1990s.
