Hagner Mister, who served as Maryland’s sixth Secretary of Agriculture from 2001 to 2003, has passed away at the age of 90. Prior to his appointment as Secretary, Mister was the department’s Deputy Secretary for three years.

Born in 1934 and a lifelong resident of Calvert County, Mister graduated from Calvert County High School and served in both the Maryland National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves. He was deeply involved in his community, holding positions on the Calvert County Board of County Commissioners, the Calvert County Board of Education, and the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland. In 2020, he received the R. Clayton Mitchell Jr. Award for Distinguished Public Service from then Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot.
Mister is survived by his wife, Helen Ann, their three children, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on January 1, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Rausch Funeral Home in Owings, Maryland. A funeral service is scheduled for January 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Prince Frederick, Maryland.
