An accidental fire broke out at Maryland Paper’s facility in Williamsport, Maryland, on December 29, 2024, causing an estimated $20,000 in damage. The fire, which began in a scrap and pulp paper waste area outside the building, was discovered by employees around 3:38 p.m. It spread to nearby cardboard bales and two trailers parked against the dock, resulting in additional damage to the structure’s roof.

Eighty-five firefighters from the primary responding department arrived to tackle the blaze, which required two hours to bring under control. The fire was confined to the exterior of the facility and did not cause any injuries or fatalities. Smoke alarms and sprinkler systems were not applicable in this outdoor area.
Fire officials have determined the cause of the fire to be improperly discarded smoking materials. The incident highlights the risks associated with such behavior, particularly near flammable materials.
