In partnership with federal, state, and local law enforcement, officials are urging migrants to avoid attempting to cross the border, citing severe weather conditions, hazardous terrain, and exploitation by human smugglers as major concerns.

The region’s winter weather, characterized by freezing temperatures, poses life-threatening risks, including hypothermia and frostbite. These dangers are compounded by the rugged terrain of the border area, which includes deserts, mountains, and remote wilderness. Increased holiday traffic on highways near the border further elevates the danger, with a higher likelihood of accidents involving migrants. Authorities reported that 176 migrants lost their lives in Fiscal Year 2024 due to smuggling-related incidents.
Officials emphasized that criminal organizations often exploit vulnerable migrants, subjecting them to dangerous smuggling operations. These smugglers prioritize profit over safety, frequently abandoning individuals in perilous situations. Law enforcement agencies continue to collaborate to counteract these operations, aiming to prevent tragedies and safeguard lives.
