EARLEVILLE, MD News (11/19/2024) – A deputy fire chief from the Hacks Point Volunteer Fire Company has been arrested and charged in connection with a brush fire that scorched two acres earlier this month. Authorities took Robert “Bobby” Bennett, 39, into custody at his home on Tuesday morning.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal began investigating after a November 4 fire on the property of Recovery Centers of America on Grove Neck Road. Surveillance footage provided by the addiction treatment center allegedly showed Bennett setting the fire, which was later extinguished by firefighters, including Bennett, who had responded with the department’s brush truck.
Bennett faces charges of second-degree malicious burning, malicious destruction of property, and reckless endangerment. He is currently being held without bond at the Cecil County Detention Center.

Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray described the incident as concerning but emphasized that the alleged actions do not reflect the dedication of Maryland’s career and volunteer firefighters. Hacks Point Volunteer Fire Company Chief Frank Redford reassured the community that the department remains committed to its mission of emergency response and public safety.
