The incident occurred on December 24, 2021, when police responded to a report of a shooting on Howell Point Road in Trappe, Maryland. Upon arrival, authorities discovered Merina outside her residence with a fatal gunshot wound. A detailed investigation led by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit resulted in a warrant being issued for Juarez’s arrest.

Juarez was initially located in Oaxaca, Mexico, on March 24, 2022, where he was detained by Mexican authorities for an unrelated crime. The U.S. Department of Justice worked with Mexican prosecutors to secure a provisional arrest request in April 2022. Although extradition was approved on October 5, 2022, it was delayed until Juarez completed his sentence in Mexico.
