This development aims to address growing concerns about emergency response times and understaffing in Hancock, a remote area of Washington County. In the spring of 2024, the Hancock Fire Department raised alarms about delayed mutual aid responses, noting that assistance from neighboring departments often took 15 to 20 minutes to arrive, with some units arriving understaffed. Given the critical role of Rescue Squad 59 in providing emergency medical services, rescue, and firefighting operations, these concerns underscored the need for enhanced local resources.
In response, DES developed a plan to strengthen the capabilities of the Hancock Rescue Squad by transitioning its EMS employees into county roles and increasing staffing levels. The newly added positions will provide 24-hour coverage, ensuring that Rescue Squad 59 is better equipped to respond to emergencies quickly and efficiently. This will also allow for more reliable staffing of a second ambulance owned by the Hancock Rescue Squad, further improving response capacity.

R. David Hays, Director of Emergency Services, expressed appreciation for the support of the Board of County Commissioners in making this transition possible. “These new positions will significantly enhance our fire and rescue capabilities and improve the safety of our firefighters in Hancock and the surrounding areas,” Hays said. “The addition of this staffing will help ensure a more robust and efficient response to emergencies in the remote areas of Western Washington County.”
The County’s move to bolster emergency services in Hancock reflects a broader commitment to improving public safety and ensuring that even its more rural communities receive timely and well-staffed emergency responses. With these new measures in place, residents in the Hancock area can expect improved service and faster response times during emergencies.
