The suspect, identified as Joshua John Cook, 34, of Fairfax County, Virginia, was taken into custody on September 19, 2024, at his residence by the Virginia State Police. Cook faces multiple charges, including felony assault and firearms offenses. According to law enforcement officials, Cook was released by a Virginia judge while awaiting further court proceedings.

The investigation stemmed from a February 2, 2024, incident in which Maryland State Police responded to a report of a road-rage confrontation involving a black Ford F-150. Witnesses stated that the driver of the vehicle pointed a firearm at another motorist in the vicinity of Interstate 95 and Route 1 in Prince George’s County.

Through the course of the investigation, state police were able to identify Cook as the suspect involved in the incident, aided by dashcam footage obtained from one of the vehicles at the scene. Virginia State Police, working in coordination with their Maryland counterparts, later seized a handgun from Cook’s vehicle as part of the investigation.

The Maryland State Police stressed their ongoing commitment to reducing incidents of gun violence on Maryland highways, urging motorists to remain vigilant and practice safe driving behaviors to prevent road-rage incidents, collisions, and other dangers on the roadways. A statement from the department urged drivers to avoid aggressive driving, distracted driving, and speeding to minimize risks to themselves and others.

In a related appeal, Maryland State Police are continuing to investigate several unsolved highway-related homicides, including the murders of Delonte Hicks, Charles Marks, and Nyah Hairston. Investigators are asking the public to provide any information that may assist in these investigations or other highway gun-related crimes by contacting police at 410-538-1887.
