According to officials, the Church Hill Volunteer Fire Company and Queen Anne’s County Department of Emergency Services were dispatched to the 200 block of Laysan Teal Court in Church Hill just before 11:00 p.m. in response to reports of a traumatic injury. Upon arrival, first responders found the teenager suffering from burns and other traumatic injuries. After being stabilized on the scene, he was airlifted by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, where he is currently listed in stable condition.
The Office of the State Fire Marshal was called in to investigate after it became clear that the injuries were caused by an explosion. Through their investigation, officials determined that the teenager had attempted to discharge a metal pipe filled with an unknown quantity of black powder using a cigarette lighter. The device exploded, resulting in the injuries.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with the handling of black powder and improvised devices. Authorities continue to stress the importance of proper education and supervision to prevent such tragedies.
