Tom Garner, who has served as the principal of Salem Avenue for nearly two decades, attributes the school’s achievements to a positive school culture. Garner’s dedication to improving the school’s climate began after attending a presentation at the Model Schools Conference several years ago. Inspired by the ideas presented, he initiated several programs designed to strengthen relationships within the school community. Today, the school is united under the rallying cry, “1323 is the Place to Be.”

The announcement of Salem Avenue’s recognition as a Model School was made during the 2024 Model Schools Conference. At the conference, teachers Marcie Burleson, Kimberly Newcomer, Tyler Newcomer, Community Schools Specialist Dominic Gianninoto, and Principal Garner delivered two presentations titled “Transforming Futures: Innovative Ideas for Improving School Culture and Student Achievement.” These presentations highlighted the school’s efforts to cultivate a positive environment and the resulting impact on student performance.

Salem Avenue has implemented several initiatives to build and maintain a positive school culture. One notable program is the “Blitz,” where teachers visit the homes of every student before the start of the school year. This effort aims to build strong relationships between teachers, students, and families while giving educators a better understanding of the community they serve.

Another initiative, “Rock the Block,” is an annual block party and barbecue held at the school after the meet-the-teacher event. This gathering helps families learn about resources provided by community partners and fosters connections among school staff, students, and families.

Throughout the school year, students and staff recite the Salem Saber Pledge each morning, committing to building relationships and showing respect. The pledge reads:

“I’m a Salem Saber and it’s up to me
To treat others with respect and show responsibility
We try our best so everyone can see
1323 is the place to be!”

This daily ritual reinforces the importance of respect and responsibility within the school community. Teachers at Salem Avenue prioritize getting to know each student, understanding that relationships are crucial to learning. Instruction is tailored to meet individual needs through small group activities, and students are encouraged to share their learning through school-hosted showcases. Special guest speakers and field trips further enrich the educational experience.

The school also celebrates special occasions by having the community wear themed T-shirts, promoting a sense of unity and keeping the annual theme at the forefront of everyone’s minds. At the end of the school year, the “Summer Sendoff” initiative allows every student to select free books to take home, encouraging continued reading and learning over the summer break.

The Center for Model Schools, a division of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), is dedicated to providing year-round leadership support through its Model Schools Conference, leadership cohorts, and one-on-one consulting. By partnering with The Center, educational leaders can create an environment where students achieve their fullest potential, embodying the belief that every child deserves a Model School.

Salem Avenue Elementary’s recognition as a Model School is a testament to the hard work and dedication of its staff, students, and community. The innovative programs and positive school culture have not only improved student achievement but also fostered a supportive and inclusive community where every student can thrive.
