At approximately 10:00 a.m., a hazardous materials leak was reported at Boonsboro High School as technicians were servicing the air conditioning system. The leak led to the immediate evacuation of all students and staff members to the school stadium. Fire personnel and Special Operations units promptly responded to the scene to manage the situation and ensure the safety of everyone on the premises. According to Washington County Government the substance is Halocarbon 22; also known as Freon 22.

Freon 22, also known as R-22 or chlorodifluoromethane (CHClF2), is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) used primarily as a refrigerant in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. R-22 is relatively non-toxic but can displace oxygen in confined spaces, leading to asphyxiation. It is non-flammable under normal conditions but can decompose into toxic and corrosive gases at high temperatures. Freon 22 has played a significant role in refrigeration and air conditioning but is being phased out due to its environmental impact, leading to the adoption of more sustainable alternatives.

In response to the incident, students were initially relocated to the stadium. As a precautionary measure, they have now been moved to Boonsboro Elementary School and Boonsboro Middle School to facilitate a more organized dismissal process.

  • Students with last names beginning with A through L: These students will be dismissed from Boonsboro Elementary School.
  • Students with last names beginning with M through Z: These students will be dismissed from Boonsboro Middle School.

Parents and guardians are urged to note the specific dismissal locations based on their child’s last name to ensure a smooth and efficient process.

The school has established the following protocols for the early dismissal:

  • Non-bus Riders: Students who do not take the bus will only be released to a parent, legal guardian, or an emergency contact already on record with the school. This measure ensures the safety and accountability of all students.
  • Student Drivers: Student drivers will be permitted to transport only their family members.
  • Walkers: Students who typically walk to school will be dismissed as usual at 11:15 a.m.

Parents and guardians needing to contact the school regarding their child are advised to call the school where their child has been relocated. The school administration and first responders are working closely to manage the situation and provide further updates as necessary.
