HAGERSTOWN, MD News (4/29/2024) – On April 28, 2024, at approximately 10:30 am, officers from the Hagerstown Police Department responded to a welfare check request at a residence in the 400 block of McDowell Ave. Upon arrival, they discovered the body of an individual, later identified as a 57-year-old.

Criminal investigators and forensic crime scene personnel were then dispatched to the scene to conduct further investigations. Initial assessments suggested that the incident was a domestic-related homicide.

Later in the day, around 5:30 pm, Cleo Hermon Brown, aged 50 and a resident of Hagerstown, was apprehended in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in connection with the case. The victim has been identified as Renee Elizabeth Shoemaker, also aged 57 and from Hagerstown.

Brown is scheduled to have an extradition hearing to facilitate his return to Maryland for legal proceedings.

The Hagerstown Police Department extended condolences to the family of the deceased and expressed its commitment to diligently pursuing justice for the victim, their family, and their acquaintances.

As the investigation progresses, additional details will be disclosed as deemed appropriate by law enforcement. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation, spanning across state boundaries, underscores the commitment to swiftly address such incidents and bring those responsible to account.
