HAGERSTOWN, MD News (3/28/2024) – Six exceptional educators have emerged as finalists for the prestigious 2024–2025 Teacher of the Year Award in Washington County. The announcement, made jointly by the Washington County Public Schools (WCPS) and the Washington County Chamber of Commerce, marks a celebration of excellence in education within the community.

Dr. David Sovine, the Superintendent of Schools at WCPS, personally visited each finalist’s classroom on March 20 to deliver the news, recognizing their outstanding contributions to education. These finalists were selected from a pool of 73 nominees, reflecting the high caliber of teaching talent in Washington County.
Autumn Ackerman, a devoted special education teacher at Marshall Street School, brings eight years of experience to her role. Her emphasis on tailored instruction and hands-on learning experiences underscores her commitment to equipping students with the skills essential for post-graduation success.
Brittany Collins, serving as a 6th/8th Grade English Language Learners Teacher at Springfield Middle School for eight years, not only fosters academic growth but also actively engages with students and their families through various initiatives, promoting inclusivity and support.

Angie Stouffer, an esteemed Science Teacher at Smithsburg High School for 18 years, champions the success of all students by providing tailored support and opportunities for growth, both academically and personally.
Stephanie Twigg, a magnet teacher at Williamsport Elementary School, exhibits unwavering dedication to her students’ holistic development, earning her nominations for the Teacher of the Year Award for six consecutive years.
The finalists’ diverse backgrounds and approaches exemplify the richness of the teaching profession in Washington County. Their commitment to student success, innovative practices, and community engagement serve as inspirations for educators across the region.
The community will have the opportunity to celebrate these outstanding educators at the upcoming awards ceremony on April 17, 2024, at the Fountain Head Country Club. During this event, the 2024-2025 Washington County Teacher of the Year will be announced, with the winner advancing to compete in the Maryland Teacher of the Year competition.
Tickets for the ceremony, priced at $65 each, offer an opportunity for residents to join in honoring the finalists and recognizing the invaluable contributions of educators to the community’s educational landscape. Tickets can be purchased from the Washington County Chamber of Commerce.
