HAGERSTOWN, MD News (3/26/2024) – In a concerted effort to address the diverse needs of students in the Washington County Public Schools (WCPS), a collaborative initiative between educational, medical, and business communities has been unveiled. Named Landon’s Project, this endeavor seeks to provide immediate services tailored to students requiring both medical and educational interventions within a school environment.

Led by Dr. David Sovine, Superintendent of Schools, the initiative underscores a commitment to ensuring all students have access to the necessary resources to thrive academically and personally. “All of our community’s children deserve to learn in an environment that provides the necessary supports and resources where students can thrive and grow their abilities,” remarked Dr. Sovine, emphasizing the collaborative effort across various sectors.

Set to be housed at the former Funkstown Elementary School, Landon’s Project will serve as a comprehensive resource available system-wide to students enrolled in WCPS. The program is designed to cater to students who stand to benefit from coordinated medical and educational services, aiming to bridge the gap between traditional education and specialized care.

Named after Landon Smith, the grandson of Benito Vattelana, one of the driving forces behind the initiative, Landon’s Project is rooted in personal experience. Vattelana shared, “When Landon was initially diagnosed with autism, there was a lot of uncertainty in what the future held for him. As our family has navigated this journey, we have found that the right supports and strategies specifically suited for Landon helped him discover incredible abilities and talents. It made me wonder how many other Landons are in our community who need this same adaptive care.”

The project represents a unique public/private partnership, with private donors playing a crucial role in kickstarting the program alongside securing public funding for sustained operations. Members of the Landon’s Project Advisory Board are committed to pooling their expertise to ensure the initiative’s success, recognizing its potential to benefit the entire Washington County community.

Through Landon’s Project, WCPS aims to foster an inclusive learning environment equipped to meet the diverse needs of its student population. By leveraging resources from the medical and business communities, the initiative seeks to transcend traditional educational paradigms, offering tailored interventions and support systems to empower students to reach their full potential.
