In the picturesque setting of Western Maryland, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad has initiated a noteworthy campaign to rejuvenate two revered steam locomotives: 2-6-6-2 No. 1309 and 2-8-0 No. 734. This endeavor unfolds against the backdrop of a region steeped in railroad history, where the essence of these locomotives intertwines with the broader narrative of rail transportation.

The former Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) 2-6-6-2, No. 1309, served as the heritage railroad’s steam workhorse for the past two years following a multi-year, substantial rebuild at Western Maryland Scenic’s Ridgeley, W.Va., shops. However, a recent setback emerged when the need for new pistons and rods was discovered during December operations. Acknowledging this requirement, the railroad has expedited its planned maintenance. No. 1309, a Compound Mallet, was one of 10 identical Class H-6 locomotives ordered by the C&O in 1948. Its acquisition by Western Maryland Scenic in 2014 adds a layer to the rich legacy of the late steam era.

Simultaneously, No. 734, a 2-8-0 locomotive, previously underwent a meticulous 1,472-day inspection and comprehensive rebuild. Originating as Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad No. 34, it boasts a diverse history, having been part of the Marquette & Huron Mountain Railroad before finding its way to the Illinois Railroad Museum and eventually joining Western Maryland Scenic in 1991. Its transformation in 1993 into a representation of the Western Maryland Class H Consolidation showcases a significant chapter in the development of 2-8-0 locomotives.

The fundraising initiative aims to secure the necessary resources for repairs and restoration, facilitating the return of both locomotives to operational status. Those enthusiastic about contributing to the preservation of these locomotives can explore the donation page on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad’s website.

As these locomotives undergo revival, this initiative mirrors the broader commitment to preserving Western Maryland’s rich railroad legacy. The region, with its scenic allure and historical resonance, stands as a testament to the timeless allure of rail transportation. Through collective efforts, these locomotives, with their intricate histories, may soon resonate through the hills, bridging the present to the storied railroad history of Western Maryland.
