Western Maryland hunters, eager for another chance at a turkey harvest, will have their opportunity as the 2024 Winter Turkey Season kicks off on January 18 and runs through January 20, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
For those who missed the fall season, this is a unique chance to venture outdoors during a time when hunting seasons wind down. Karina Stonesifer, the Director of Wildlife and Heritage Service at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, encourages hunters to make the most of this winter season by enjoying one last hunt before spring.
Hunting hours during the winter turkey season span from one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset. The bag limit allows hunters to take one turkey of either sex. This limited-time opportunity is tailor-made for Western Maryland’s enthusiastic hunting community.
Shotguns loaded with No. 4 shot or smaller, crossbows, vertical bows, and airguns that shoot arrows or bolts are the only authorized equipment during the winter turkey season. However, hunters are reminded that using bait to attract turkeys is strictly illegal.
Successful hunters need to check in their harvest promptly. They can do so via phone at 888-800-0121, online, or through the department’s mobile app. The Maryland Guide to Hunting and Trapping is a valuable resource providing detailed information about winter turkey hunting, including open dates and regulations.
As the winter season unfolds, Western Maryland residents are encouraged to embrace the outdoors, savoring the thrill of a winter turkey hunt. Take advantage of this limited-time opportunity to connect with nature and enjoy the unique experience that winter hunting brings.
