HAGERSTOWN, MD News (1/4/2024) – Sean Flaherty has officially announced his candidacy for a position on the Hagerstown City Council. In a press release, Flaherty outlined his commitment to fostering a united community, addressing pressing issues, and implementing positive change within the city.

Flaherty, a Washington DC native, became a part of the Hagerstown community in 2021, drawn by the scenic landscapes, affordable living, and a more relaxed lifestyle. His involvement in local affairs includes his current position on the Hagerstown Planning Commission, where he was appointed in March 2023, and his leadership role in the Neighborhood’s 1st group, Dewey Central, in 2023.

In his press release, Flaherty highlighted his belief in the necessity of a collective effort to overcome shared challenges. He emphasized the need for a departure from the status quo, addressing concerns such as persistent sirens, homelessness, drug abuse, and neglected buildings. Flaherty expressed optimism, asserting that Hagerstown’s best days lie ahead and can be realized through strategic efforts.

Flaherty’s platform centers on three key pillars: Public Safety, Economic Development and Investment, and Hagerstown City Services/Quality of Life Issues. His proposals for each area are detailed and focus on practical approaches to improve the community.

Under the Public Safety pillar, Flaherty advocates for increased police presence and engagement, exploring innovative technologies such as ShotSpotter, and supporting initiatives to address homelessness and drug addiction.

In terms of Economic Development and Investment, Flaherty aims to attract higher-paying jobs, repurpose blighted buildings, and collaborate with local colleges to retain talent. He also supports the expansion of the MARC train Brunswick Line for improved job opportunities.

For Hagerstown City Services and Quality of Life Issues, Flaherty proposes revisiting traffic engineering, addressing road conditions, noise concerns, and enhancing the city’s emergency response capabilities.

Flaherty places a strong emphasis on transparent and accountable governance in the Hagerstown city government. He commits to scrutinizing budgetary allocations, ensuring effective use of funds, and maintaining a transparent decision-making process.

Flaherty’s official campaign kick-off is scheduled for Saturday, January 20th, at 4 pm at The Greene Turtle (12818-A Shank Farm Way, Hagerstown, MD 21742). Supporters can contribute or volunteer through the campaign’s website at https://flaherty4council.com/. Flaherty encourages residents to join him in his pursuit of positive change and a brighter future for Hagerstown.
